At the 2008 Dickens Festival the public kindly donated enough money for us to start up a small gardening project, which we called ‘Home Grown’. Home Grown project is an opportunity for clients to learn some new outdoor skills or improve on existing ones, like problem-solving, working as a team, achieving results, growing and eating healthy food, working to a tight budget and etc.

In 2009 we undertook another social fund-raiser at the Dickens festival and this time we were able to sell produce and herbs that clients had grown throughout the summer.

In 2010 we have acquired an allotment and are making plans to grow this project even further. Ultimately, we would like to see Home grown become a social enterprise that offers clients formal training in horticulture, thereby increasing their employability. At the very least, gardening is a great hobby that our clients can enjoy and have fun with.
