Our History

Years going back graphicMedway Cyrenians has had a presence in the Medway area going back over forty years. The original Medway Cyrenians was registered with the Charity Commission in 1974, having operated before that time on an informal basis only. In 1994 the charity was further formalised and re-registered to acknowledge the changes to its legal status.

In line with national trends the charity has taken on various guises and operated out of various sites in the Medway area over the years, but its vision has always been to eradicate the causes of homelessness so that all local people are able to enjoy a positive, healthy life in a warm, secure and safe home, with a sense of community and something worthwhile to do with their time.

Medway Cyrenians aim is to support single homeless people in moving towards greater independent living through a package of support tailored to their individual needs.

In the past the charity adopted a ‘community living’ model of service delivery, with volunteers living on-site with clients and acting as supportive role models.

These days, support is delivered through a professionally trained staff team, but the core values remain the same:

  • To value, acknowledge and respond to the needs and aspirations of single homeless people
  • To strive to continually improve our standards of service delivery through staff development, consultation and partnership working
  • To provide a diverse and flexible service that offers choice to single homeless people
  • To recognise the value of diversity and promote equal opportunity for all in every aspect of our work
  • To encourage the involvement of our clients in decisions that affects their lives
